Serena Williams gives birth to Second Child and Names her Adira River Williams.

Nearly exactly a year after her final match as a tennis player, Serena Williams announced Tuesday on Instagram that she had given birth to a baby girl.

The second child of the 41-year-old Williams and her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, is Adira River Ohanian, who is also their second daughter. Olympia, their first child, was born in 2017.

Williams, whose career went beyond her sport and saw her win 23 Grand Slam singles titles, announced her pregnancy at the Met Gala in May.

Williams listed the desire to expand her family as one of the key reasons for quitting tennis when she announced to the world in August 2022 that she was getting ready to end her playing career.

If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of growing our family, Williams said in an essay for Vogue magazine last year. “Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair,” Williams wrote.

The 2022 U.S. Her final competition was the Open. She defeated second-seeded Anett Kontaveit in New York to go to the third round before falling to Ajla Tomljanovic on September 3.
