Police nab kidnap suspect after seven years on the run

Mr. Nwankwo had been on the run since 2015, when the Anambra State government demolished his home in Umuobindo village, Nteje in Oyi Local Government Area, for allegedly being used as a hideout for kidnappers.Police arrested the suspect in the early hours of Tuesday following a tip. He is being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Anambra police spokesman Toochukwu Ikenga confirmed the arrest of the suspect, according to the Nigerian News Agency (YAYA).
“The suspect is in custody. Further developments to be communicated please,” said Ikenga, deputy superintendent of police.
Kidnapping for ransom is now one of the dominant crimes in several Nigerian cities.
Politicians, businessmen, anyone with good financial worth, including school-age children, are easy targets.
Anambra is among the states hardest hit by kidnappings in Nigeria. At least three former legislators have been kidnapped in the state in the past six months, two of whom have been beheaded by their captors.
Five guests were abducted somewhere in the state in April while returning from a wedding ceremony.
Many of the deadly attacks in the states are linked to the Biafra unrest.
Anambra is among the states that have been worst hit by kidnapping in Nigeria. At least three former lawmakers have been abducted in the state in the past six months, with two of them having their heads cut off by their abductors.
